Preston Roper founded Preston's Lock & Key in 1977. The lock business was his second job. The first was protecting and serving the State of California, as well as members of Merced County, as an employee of the California Highway Patrol. In 1981 his wife Sharon joined as his partner in the locksmithing business, retiring from banking.

They purchased A-1-A Lock Shop in the early 80's. For many years the "shop" was known as
A-1-A Lock Shop and Preston's Lock & Key. When Preston died in early 1995, Sharon kept the business running with no intention to let the "shop" die with him.

Sharon sold the business, now A-1-A / Preston's Lock Shop, to her daughter and son-in-law, Art & Lisa Uribe. Sharon has retired, however she stops by in her spare time.
